ILLUSIONS OF REALITY BY TOM LEE – INAUGURATION SPEECH

Ladies and gentlemen:

“Worthy” Photographers are essentially ‘Visual Artists;’ and what is a visual artist unless he or she shows their work to the general public? We have often heard the valid expression that “a picture says a thousand words;” yet how often do photographers really attempt to say something with their pictures? A valid artist needs to express oneself and an audience is essential to give feedback, encouragement as well as to be a yardstick that helps an artist measure if the work is engaging the public.

What is a visual artist if the scope is only to create photographs and hoard them just for oneself? Many a time have I asked students of photography why they shoot photographs and, more often than not, they seem to have only a superficial idea why they are doing this! Not so Tom Lee and this exhibition: “ILLUSIONS OF REALITY.”

For me, Tom’s vision encompasses all the necessary elements that make images stand out from the millions of other meaningless snaps: Aesthetics, technique, design, post-processing skills, concept, visual impact, mystery and passion. One cannot but engage with his images. His professionalism in all areas is evident. His imagery is very often highly stylized and Tom’s classical and traditional training rewards us with a unique perspective. On his work, Tom says:

“Let your senses take over and immerse yourself in the world of the fantastic. Look for your own interpretation of the images and you may surprise yourself with what you find”

In an international career which spans over 35 years, I am pleased to have been able to help in having Tom regale us with this body of work and chosen Malta as his exhibition venue.

I would like to end by thanking all those who have made this exhibition possible; particularly Continental Cars; Sandro Cauchi; Keith Ellul; the MIPP Committee; Intervisions and finally, Tom Lee and Podge Kelly for being not only fantastic colleagues but sincere friends.

Thank you

Guests and exhibits
